WEEK THREE - Visual literacy

Sherry Turkles: the Goldy locks effect: This is where two people cant get enough of each other, by texting! the person is at a distance and they can control how much you talk to them/when to stop- this is what people love, you can control it! Visual Literacy is us as a person decoding:

•  text
•  images - anchorage, words anchor images.
• cinematography
• Objects

Which others have encoded with typical codes and conventions which relate to the genre or narrative.

If we watch a love film or a horror film for example, we see the same thing happen over and over.
Love film: couple break up/or get together-- someone gets in the way -- the original couple is always back together in the end
Horror films- the protagonist defeats the antagonist somehow.
But if we didnt see these typical story lines, how would we react? would we feel satified?

We can also neglect things we dont want too see (Deterrorization):

• Spiders- we block it out on TV/cinema/real life
• being outside your body - a digital life online (fake/real: runescape, facebook, world of warcraft- all big distractions for every day life!)

We learn more:

• real life experiences rather than watching TV or the news!

Because directors show us what they want us to see, sometimes using propagranda.The more we hear or see something the more we believe it, this is why I believe strongly of propaganda and the influence it has on mass audiences.

A Classic Text Message Conversation

My opinion/ short intro:

 

The questions:

• Do you think your school prepaired you for university?

• Why do you think some people think its controversial to go to univeristy? (changed the question since the people I am asking do not know/have learned about  Arum and Roska's report)

I had a look on moodle at the ePDP and saw a template for me to fill in, I created my own because I feel is much more personal too me and the course I am doing.

 

This ePDP is to help me

• Grow as a person/individual
• Help me get the support I need from my pears and lectures
• find out specificly what im doing wrong and where
• See what my weaknesses are and my strengths- then apply my stregths to overcome my weaknesses
• See were my main focus areas are- where I avoid/stay within the box, rather than going that extra mile to get/think outside the box!

Where am I now




one thing I have missed from my ePDP, is another weakness of mine is being too scared to try out new mediums/ways of presenting work etc- because im scared of trying out something new then failing- I have already over come this weakness as Iv done a few podcasts (sort of) on this blog posts! This is something iv never done before.

The web 2.0 helps us:

•  as ameatures become professionals within the media industry
• social networking sites as youtube for film/singing
•  flicker/instragram for our photography

These sites offer cheap films/podcasts and photos outside expensive studios and photoshop.

Facebook ameature Picture: Flashlight

• simple idea but unique in her own way.
• the darkness within the picture shows she wants to be hiden, insecure?
• Makes the image very mysterious...
• Uploading this photo gets her quick likes, shares and feedback helping her to improve her work.

Social networking sites good points:

•  Are portable to use use from different mediums
•  Quickly create an idea/photo/video/opinion
• This also advertises for free our work and cheaply created.
•  This can relate too the music industry as well, since Justin Beiber got famous over youtube.

Safety and Privacy:

• People out there can easily make a duplicate identity of ourselves and either start trolling online, or stealing ideas and images we have taken
•  Cant do anything about this when the person is on the other side of the world and they steal an image of theres, and use it for personal gain such as a coursework assignment.
•  These issues have been raised by the government and are starting to issue some sort of ban on social networking sites on how much information is too much.
• Reading such stories online about people writing how they are out of a long walk or meal- a burglar on your facebook now knows your not home?
• Social networking sites are now just starting to fight back by letting US control the site, what we want people to see, adding our facebook friends into groups and choosing what group you want to see an image, an image you DONT want your boss to see? Also by letting us report abuse and trolling when we come across it.

• she would get retweeted or favourite/quoted by another user, within minutes even if your not friends with the girl you can see her tweet
• This can be a privacy concern.
•  The tweet states she just saw a child at the age of 9 years old with a blackberry, which can be very controversial when it comes to children and technology, how young is too young?
